Kayla's Day

Today was Kayla's funeral at the Trussville Baptist Church. She was honored with a beautiful slide show of pictures of her life and the minister read from her "My Space" including some poems she had written. Just a few days ago, she was a 20 year old college student full of enthusiasm and laughter. She was "class clown" and "biggest flirt" and also Salutatorian of her class at Parkway Christian. She was majoring in Psychology and was doing volunteer work at the Crisis Center. She wanted to make a difference in people's lives. This is the story of what happened as it has been told to me: She had been at her cousin Danielle's house tutoring our 16 year old niece, Whitney. She left to go to a friend's 21st Birthday party. She took a girl home from the party and was headed back home when she got a call from a guy friend in Auburn. She had been taught to pull over when she talked on her cell phone for safety reasons. She pulled over and then told the guy on the phone that she thought a couple of guys were following her. She pulled off and later pulled over again into the Glen Iris Elem. School parking lot. After talking a few minutes, she said " Oh my goodness, they are everywhere." The guy told her to get out of there and lay the phone down. He then heard 2 loud noises. One must have been the gunshot that came through the passenger window of her BMW Convertible and the other the crash into a street sign and metal railings that were knocked down at the crime scene. There was not an answer when the boy called her name, so he hung up and called her brother. Her brother called 911 and by the time he drove to the area where he thought she would be, the police were already on the scene. She felt no pain because she died immediately. Kayla, not only in your life, but in your death, you HAVE made a difference and we already miss you. Danielle was able to get a grave site touching baby Chloe's for Kayla to be laid to rest. Although her body was buried there today, she is already in heaven holding Chloe and playing with her. I can just imagine them laughing and having a great time. Danielle was holding up very well and takes comfort that her baby will not be lonely now that her best friend has gone to take care of her. Please pray for strength and comfort for all Kayla's family and friends. Also, pray that her killer/s will be captured soon. I just had to talk with both of my daughter's today and tell them that I love them. Life is short sometimes. Don't waste it. I went back to work after the funeral and then up to Cook Springs to see Mom. Little Buddy, the soft stuffed puppy that I gave her a couple of months ago had been MIA for a few days, but had showed back up. He was so clean that I think he must have gotten lost in a blanket and thrown in the wash. I talked with Alyce tonight and she said Terry has been working 4 to 5 hours a day for the past 3 days. She has also gone to work and the Thrasher Bus Company is about to move to a new location. They had been to a family birthday party tonight at Kobei's on 280. Terry was still feeling good and still hungry when he got home. It makes me get emotional and thankful just to think of him feeling good for a change. We know the power of prayer and will be eternally grateful to you who have been so faithful to lift up our names to our heavenly Father.

God's love and blessings to all of you. What an incredible story of love and strength from such a beautiful young woman. Her desire to help people will continue on through her life's story to inspire others for years to come. I join you all in prayers for the killers to come to quick and appropriate punishments for their actions. The gangs must be stopped! We are all, including all of our children, at risk with this behavior in our midst.
Love, prayers, and healing strength to all of her family and friends.
